Zoos, Aquaria and Ponds

It's image on the phone

At the age of five, my parents moved from a small countryside town to Tel Aviv. I grew up as a city nature boy — following the little critters in the building’s backyard, watching birds in the air, and visiting the big animals at the zoo. I owe my affinity for the natural world to all of them, and to my father, who took me often to open parks and the zoo. All of that destined me to become a professional naturalist.

Zoos, aquaria, and ponds are all man-made enclosures. Photography in zoos is a loaded act of creation. It is also a technical and artistic challenge — requiring the photographer to cope with contrasting lights, reflections, and bars, while navigating emotional and intellectual tensions that demand conscious artistic choices.

Most of the photography workshops I lead are in zoos, combining zoology with wildlife and street photography.
